Why I Trust NOW Foods for my Natural Products

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Fitfluential, LLC on behalf of NOW Foods. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

In health and fitness, there are lots of claims and labels being thrown around by brands and people. As a former chemist (who will always be a science nerd at heart), I’m the type of person that finds the actual research article when I read a headline about a new study. Sometimes there are small samples for the study, bias, or parts of the research aren’t addressed. The same thing goes with labels such as “natural” not being a regulated label or even their being specifics about what constitutes “organic”. Before visiting NOW Foods headquarters just outside of Chicago for the #NOWGetFit influencer event this month, I hadn’t considered myself super brand loyal, but now I can tell you I trust NOW Foods!

NOW Foods #NOWGetFit Day 1
After a travel snafu (ugh American Airlines WHY) I made it out to the event on Thursday starting with a trip to the Cooking Skills Academy for an “Iron Chef Challenge” using NOW Foods ingredients.

Chef showing us how it's done.

My team won with a take on an avocado toast-clearly all those years watching Iron Chef and the Food Network have paid off!

The winning dish!
Also forgot to mention that the before our challenge the night before, Kasey from Powercakes made us DELICIOUS protein donuts. I don’t throw around the word delicious paired with protein donuts ever.
Girl, I'd watch your Food Network show.
I’ve bought many NOW Foods products in the past because it seemed to be good quality and has been a very affordable option for me for supplements, essential oils, and baking products. I’ve bought their products in natural food stores like Whole Foods, on Amazon, or on iHerb. All of their products are free of preservatives or artificial ingredients.

Getting to listen to the NOW Foods CEO Jim Emme talk about the company and hear about its history was really eye-opening. Today it is one of the largest independent manufacturers of natural products in the U.S. with over 1500 different products including foods, supplements, sports nutrition, essential oils, health & beauty products, and a new pet supplement line.

The company spends very little money on marketing which helps them keep their cost so low for consumers which may be why you’re unfamiliar with the brand. You may recognize their signature orange and white label from health food stores or your own pantry!

NOW is still family-owned since Elwood Richard started the company in 1968 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It still continues its original goal of making healthy, quality, and affordable products.

When I made it back to my hotel room at the Eaglewood Resort & Spa that night (which was fabulous!) I sifted through two giant bags of NOW Foods products including protein powder, a diffuser and essential oils, and supplements (psst…you can win the same gift bags valued at $520 on my Instagram)

Swag on swag.

NOW Foods #NOWGetFit Day 2

The next morning we got up bright and early for a tough group tabata workout with the lovely Kasey from Powercakes.

The group post-workout

This lady is so much fun and knows how to lead a killer workout.

After our workout, NOW Foods had created the smoothie bar dreams are made of so we could refuel with our own smoothie creations.
Can I have this in my apartment every day?

I got to try out NOW Foods protein powders, MCT oil, amino acids, and more. While enjoying my smoothie, I learned more about the sports nutrition which I was very interested in as an athlete.

NOW Sports uses quality ingredients that are heavily researched and tested. This year NOW Sports will have the Informed-Sport certification which is a globally recognized assurance program by the LGC for anti-doping that certifies that every batch of a supplement product and raw material with the certification logo has been tested for banned substances. Professional and collegiate athletes can use the 150+ products in the NOW Sports line without worrying about the ingredients. I even met a couple awesome Olympic athletes at the event who were NOW Foods ambassadors!

All the proteins and MCT oils-with the new labels coming out soon!
Later in the morning we headed over to the NOW Foods Operations facility to take a tour of the plant in Bloomingdale, IL (they do public tours monthly FYI!). I was honestly blown away by the level of quality, documentation, and testing. NOW tests each and every batch of raw materials and finished products that come into and leave the facility. All of their products are non-GMO, and their products in the Living Now line are produced in a dedicated gluten-free and allergen-friendly facility. These products are made without the 8 major allergens (including dairy, eggs, soy, wheat, nuts, and fish).

Looking chic in my factory gear and hairnet!
So clean and organized.

As someone who spent the last 7 years working in research labs, I was excited to learn about their Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs as well as see their labs. NOW has an A rating from the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and is one of the first to seek GMP certification in 2000. Their testing goes above and beyond this as I mentioned earlier, making sure that everything that they say is in their products is actually there, free of contamination.

I used to work with these LCMS machines-but look how many they have!
Also without geeking out too much, their labs were immaculately clean and organized (and yes some of these labs had people working in them). Learning a little about their research to make a stevia that was complete but not bitter-tasting was interesting too.

Research poster on NOW and stevia
Everyone I met from the company and in the factory was friendly too, which is nice to see in a company.

After the tour we headed to the corporate headquarters for lunch catered by Whole Foods which was a dream-like a Whole Foods hot/cold bar without having to weigh your plate! I learned more about NOW Food’s body care products and essential oils and also made my own fitness cleaning spray and sports soak.

All the Mediterranean goodness on one plate.

NOW Solutions, their health and beauty care line is made of pure and natural ingredients. Besides being affordable, their essential oils are certified organic and 100% pure, which is tested using strict quality standards. I learned that their essential oils are some of their top-selling products!

One of the fellow influencers asked the CEO Jim why fly a bunch of influencers/bloggers out here and take the time to put on such a nice event for us when he could pay for marketing. He said that we shouldn’t undervalue ourselves and that visiting the company in person is more valuable to him because we can see it all for ourselves and share our experiences with other friends, family, and followers. To him that was more important than any TV commercial. So I left the weekend 100% trusting the NOW Foods brand and knowing that when I’m buying their product, I’m getting exactly what the label says.

Some of my swag that YOU can win too!
Again, I’m partnering with NOW Foods for a giveaway to win the same amazing swag bag I received with over $520 worth of products including an oil diffuser, body care products, protein powder, baking products, and more. Head over to my Instagram to enter!

Eat More Greens: What I Ate in a Day {with BrightFarms}

Disclosure: I received promotional consideration from BrightFarms. As always all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Sometimes I get in ruts where I've been so busy that I notice I haven't really been eating any greens. Oops

I find myself grabbing some protein bars, oatmeal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, and whatever for dinner (including pizza sometimes because it's my favorite and SO easy). So I drink some green juice, eat some salads, and re-balance my diet. A couple weeks ago was one of those times that I decided that I really needed to start adding more greens and vegetables into my diet again. I wanted to start this diet shift off by including vegetables in every meal of the day. It encouraged me to get creative in the kitchen and actually make a meal plan. Planning actually makes things a lot easier when you take the time to do the planning, in case you forgot (like I had).

This all happened at the perfect time because BrightFarms was lucky enough to send me some of their produce to try out, which made my one-day challenge more fun. I was going to use 1 shell of the BrightFarms local spring mix, 1 of their local baby greens, and 1 of their kale in a different meal of the day.

eat-more-greens-what-i-ate-in-a-day-brightfarms

BrightFarms is a produce company that uses sustainable greenhouse farming to supply grocery stores with fresh greens, tomatoes, and herbs year-round. In the DMV area they solely deliver their produce to Giant grocery stores, farm to shelf within 24 hours. I was excited because unfresh produce and buying lettuce from the grocery store and finding a couple smelly, slimy pieces that have gone bad within a day is super annoying. If you need to grab some greens and can't make it out to a farmer's market or local farm, BrightFarms from your grocery store is the next best thing!

Meal 1- Breakfast: Queen Green Smoothie

I decided to keep it nice and simple for breakfast with a green smoothie. This was also portable to take in the car with me on the way to class which is a bonus. I created this smoothie on the fly, using whatever I had available in my refrigerator and pantry. I like trying out new smoothie recipes, but usually end up making ones with my favorite ingredients like frozen pineapple anyways. This is the Queen Green because it's one of my go-to smoothie variations and is queen to me!

queen-green-smoothie-brightfarms-1

Into my Ninja blender for my Queen Green Smoothie I added:
  • a  handful of BrightFarms kale
  • a handful of frozen pineapple and peaches mix
  • 1 1/2 cups of vanilla unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 tablespoon of honey
  • Optional: 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder or supplement-I used a scoop of Vital Proteins collagen in this smoothie.
queen-green-smoothie-brightfarms-2

Blended everything up, and it was ready to go. Despite the color, you can barely taste the greens in this smoothie. Everything went into the blender and within minutes I had breakfast on-the-go, packed with lots of yummy goodness.

Meal 2-Lunch: a Mediterranean-style Salad

Today was one of those days where I was able to stop home in between class and heading to work. I actually dislike packing salads (probably why I was eating more sandwiches lately) so I love when I can grab lunch at home. I can't take all of the credit for this one because my lovely boyfriend actually whipped this salad up for me.

mediterranean-salad-brightfarms-1

This Mediterranean inspired salad includes adding all of the following to a bowl, mixing, and enjoying:
  • BrightFarms baby kale
  • shredded carrots
  • chopped cucumbers
  • feta cheese
  • kalamata olives
  • Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing

This salad was so delicious. I have been loving olives in everything lately so the mixture of the salty olives with the sweet carrots and creamy feta cheese just hit the spot. I also loved the texture of the baby kale which made for a great salad base.

Meal 3-Dinner: Cheesy Taco Skillet

Making some sort of Mexican-inspired meal is always a go-to for me whether it's tacos, enchiladas, taco salad, or a taco skillet, like what I made this day for dinner.

I used this recipe from Sweet C's as a guide for my cheesy taco skillet  and used BrightFarms local spring mix as the greens in it. The best part is I cooked everything in this one big pan so clean-up was easy.

My cheesy taco skillet (adapted from Sweet C's) included:
  • 1 lb of ground beef ( I used grass fed ground beef)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 1, 12 oz. can of diced tomatoes with green chiles
  • 1 large zucchini, diced
  • 1 green pepper, diced
  • 2 tbsp of taco seasoning
  • 2 cups (I just did two big handfuls) of local spring mix (or any greens you prefer)
  • 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese

cheesy-taco-skillet-brightfarms-1

First brown the ground beef in the pan, and then drain the excess fat. Next add onions and peppers, cook until browned. Then add the canned tomatoes, taco seasoning and zucchini into the pan. Then add the spring mix or greens and let fully wilt, mixing everything together. Finally add the shredded cheese on top and cover to let the cheese melt. This took just a few minutes. You can eat it right out of a bowl like I did or could even eat over rice or in a burrito.

Of course, I made sure to include plenty of cheesy goodness on top! Sadly it was so good, there was only a tiny bit of leftovers. The greens in this wilt so you are getting lots of nutrients that you can't even really taste-perfect for those picky eater kids or significant others.

cheesy-taco-skillet-brightfarms-2

I'm a totally snack queen so in between I had multiple snacks during the day  including a yogurt, trail mix, and good old protein bar. Adding in greens to all of my big meals of the day was a lot easier than I thought. I was happy to be balancing my diet as well as preparing some delicious meals in the kitchen instead of grabbing sandwiches, pre-packaged meals and snacks. I was thinking of making it a fun Monday challenge for myself to help me start planning my meals and beginning the week on a high note after enjoying some weekend treats.

Shout-out to BrightFarms for supplying some yummy greens for my challenge-Marylanders can find their products in local Giant grocery stores.

5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day {Friday Favorites}

Disclosure: Boodywear sent me complimentary product in honor of Earth Day. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This Saturday, April 22, 2017 is Earth Day. I believe in taking care of our planet, sharing it with the other creatures that live on it, and trying to live a more eco-conscious existence. Yup, I'm a little flower child as my dad would say. My lifestyle isn't 100% eco-friendly(why do I ALWAYS forget to take my reusable bags back out to the car to use again after using them?!?!), but I try to add in some little things because sustainability is important.

Cue the Captain Planet theme song.

For my Friday Favorites this week, here are 5 easy ways you can celebrate Earth Day in Baltimore and beyond.

5-easy-ways-to-celebrate-earth-day1

1. Recycle.

Simple concept that we hear all the time, but recycling is awesome. Don't let your trash sit in a landfill if it can be recycled! I recycle a ton and will literally carry around empty containers in my purse if I can't find a recycle bin because throwing things away that can be recycled (and have the little recycle symbol on them) hurts my heart.

recycle-symbol

E-waste or electronic waste is actually becoming a trash issue in the states so find out where you can recycle your e-waste on the EPA's website. When I moved recently, we donated some old computer parts and cell-phones so donating is also an option-just google for local shops or organizations that accept those products. I definitely have a bag of dead batteries I need to get around to recycling this weekend.

2. Use a reusable water bottle.

Disposable plastic water bottles are terrible, and I rarely use them after learning more about recycling in an environmental biology class my senior year of college. Most of the country's plastic water bottles are sitting in landfills instead of being recycled, and 2.5 million plastic water bottles are thrown away every hour by Americans-SAY WHAT?! (source).

I'm pretty much always carrying a reusable water bottle with me. I have many reusable water bottles, but my go-to is the Nathan BigShot 32 oz water bottle which is BPA-free, has a nice spot, and only needs to be filled up a few times a day

3. Shop for eco-conscious & sustainable brands.

I love seeing more Eco-friendly and conscious brands selling all sorts of products including beauty, cleaning, and clothing. You know how much I love Prana gear which has a commitment to sustainability and has cool products like this cute bathing suit top made with recycled materials.
boody-wear-organic-bodysuit

I mentioned around the holidays how much I loved Boodywear too, an eco-friendly Australian clothing company who makes awesome basics and baby onesies. In honor of earth day they were nice enough to send me a few more of their pieces including this ADORABLE panda shirt I had to have. I also got sent one of their bodysuits so I can try wearing it with my jeans like the celebs do (I'm looking at you Khloe Kardashian). Also Emma Watson was spotted on the Beauty and the Beast press tour sporting their tee which is cool.

Anyways they produce pretty much the softest clothing ever made from yarn spun from bamboo in zero-waste factories. Their products are all organic, moisture-wicking, antibacterial and anti-fungal, hypo-allergenic, and thermo-regulating. Their shirts and leggings are super soft, stretchy, and SO comfortable. I have been living in their t-shirt and a pair of leggings. Check Boodywear out on their website or Amazon.

3. Volunteer with an organization on an earth-friendly project or attend an Earth Day celebration.

Volunteering is always a great way to give back-sometimes literally. I know here in Baltimore TreeBaltimore offers free trees that can be planted to help make the city a more green place to live. Blue Water Baltimore also offers regional stream cleanups, and their website also has a calendar which offers local trash cleanups in the area too.

Another option is to attend an educational event or Earth Day celebration. Here in Baltimore the National Aquarium is having a celebration on Saturday starting at 9 AM with interactive activities to learn about preservation and sustainability.  Check out local websites and newspapers for more events near you.

5. Get Outside

Getting outside and enjoying the beauty of nature is always a great way to celebrate the Earth. Find a beautiful place to picnic, take a hike, or go for a trail run.

Also this weekend is still part of National Parks Week so take advantage of FREE admission to any of the National Parks (apparently many are free but 117 normally charge an entrance free). Happy exploring!

Are you getting outside this weekend? What's your favorite eco-friendly product or brand?

4 Reasons Why I'm Using Collagen Peptides {Vital Proteins Review & Giveaway}

Disclosure: I was 2 complimentary tubs of Vital Proteins for review. The giveaway is fulfilled by Vital Proteins. As always, all thoughts & opinions are my own.

Like me, you may have read or heard of people (particularly in the paleo crowd) taking gelatin for health benefits such as a drinking bone broth. However, you may be wondering what do gelatin or collagen peptides actually do? Gelatin, like that JELL-O stuff?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and collagen peptides have the same amino acids as gelatin, however they are just processed differently.
Collagen peptides are hydrolyzed a.k.a. broken down into smaller amino acid chains so they are more easily digestible (I will forever be a chemistry nerd so I LOVE learning about food science).

I had heard of Vital Proteins from reading about them on various blogs, and then had the chance to talk to the lovely people at the Vital Proteins booth and snag some samples at Natural Products Expo East 2016. Vital Proteins was nice enough to send me a tub of their collagen peptides and collagen beauty greens to try out.

vital-proteins-collagen-1

The Collagen Peptides powder in the blue container come from grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine hides so they are not vegetarian. At first I thought it was a little weird that it was powder from cows, but after that initial moment of weirdness now I love how they are a natural and sustainable source of protein.

The green container of Collagen Beauty Greens contains marine collagen peptides along with greens, probiotics and skin healthy helpers like hyaluronic acid, all in a yummy coconut vanilla flavored powder.

vital-proteins-collagen-peptides-1

Because collagen is a protein in our own hair, skin, nails, bones, cartilage, and joints, the powder will help all of these parts of our body. Besides containing protein, studies show that collagen peptides can improve gut health, skin health, bone and joint health, and hormonal balance. There is a lot of research out there on the use of collagen for hair and skin health, which I found from just doing a quick search of a research database.

I've been taking the collagen peptides about 4x a week (mostly because there are always a few crazy days where I am rushing out the door), and the collagen beauty greens more sporadically. It's hard to tell from only a month, but I think my hair and nails look healthier and less brittle.

So now that you know a little bit about collagen peptides, why have I been using them?

4-reasons-why-im-using-collagen-peptides

1. They are easy to take every day.

The collagen peptides are dissolvable and unflavored (no, they do not at all taste beefy). I most often easily mix a scoop in with my coffee or tea in the morning-I can’t even taste that it was added. I have also mixed collage peptides into smoothies, juices, yogurt, and oatmeal. I’m not a huge protein powder person lately so I love that these can dissolve in both hot and cold beverages easily and add a nice protein boost to whatever I'm drinking.

vital-proteins-collagen-3-coffee

2. Collagen peptides are great for my bone health.

After my stress fracture I was interested in focusing on my bone and joint health. While the DEXA scan I had showed normal bone density, I figured supplementing and ensuring strong bones and joints couldn’t hurt. Basically bones are made up of minerals and collagen fibers. Collagen makes up 90% of our bones so ingesting collagen peptides may help bone metabolism and help increase bone density. You can read more research claims here. This is one of the bigger reasons why I started using collagen peptides.

3. Vital Protein products are natural and not full of junk.

Literally the only ingredient in Vital Proteins collagen peptides is collagen peptides, so I know exactly what I am ingesting. You can read on their website about how they exclusively produce their collagen peptides in Brazil because their cows don’t have hormones too.

vital-proteins-collagen-2

4. Skin health is important to me.

No matter how young I look or feel, I am getting older every year (and quickly approaching 30, eek). My body will continue to change and dreaded wrinkles (or what I will call my happy lines) will one day in the future start to appear. I have always been conscious of my skin health after having to go to a dermatologist and have some suspect moles removed starting at a young age, but making sure my skin looks great as I age is important too. If I can supplement with collagen and get the added bonus of helping out my skin, that is a win-win for me.

So if you are interested in adding collagen or collagen peptides to your diet check out Vital Proteins. They offer all different sizes of products including travel-sized pouches and free shipping in the U.S.

Vital Proteins was nice enough to offer (1) 10 oz. tub of their Collagen Peptides to giveaway to one reader. Enter the Rafflecopter below (U.S. residents only, sorry!) before the giveaway ends on March 6 at 12 AM EST.

Have you ever taken a collagen supplement? Have you read about gelatin or collagen supplements before?

10 Ways to Show Yourself Self-Love

So today is Valentine's Day, and while many people are haters on the idea of the holiday with all its commercialization. I have always been a fan of the holiday as a day to tell the people you love how much you care about them, in case you haven't always been finding the time to do so lately.  That means my friends, my mom, my siblings, and my boyfriend. I am spending my Valentine's Day in school, doing homework, and maybe treating myself to a run and some dessert.

It is also a nice reminder to practice self-love and show yourself that you care.  Here are 10 ideas of how to show yourself self-love today and any day!

10-ways-to-show-self-love

1. Take a bubble bath. Maybe you're like me and have a few Lush bath bombs sitting in a drawer, waiting to be used so break them out and treat yourself to a bath and some quiet time. If you don't like baths, maybe it is as simple as taking a nice, long, and relaxing shower.

2. Have a 30-second (or longer) dance party. Turn up your favorite song or put on a Spotify playlist playlist and sing or dance. Music has been shown to boost your mood and dancing makes me really happy.

3. Unwind with a hot beverage. Seems obvious, but it can do wonders for how I feel if I just spend 20 minutes in quiet room with a hot cup of tea or coffee reading one of my magazines, especially in a world where much of my day is spent with a computer or phone in my face.

yogi-tea-mug

4. Take Yourself on a Date. Spend an afternoon alone doing something you've been wanting to do. Go check out that exhibit at the art museum you have been wanting to see. Take yourself to the movies. I find sometimes it's less stressful to not have to make plans with anyone else and allowing myself to have an afternoon that is on my own time, at my pace.

5. Unplug for an hour. Particularly at the end of a long day of work or school, turn your phone off (or at least the notifications). Allow yourself to spend an hour tech-free except possibly for playing some music.  I like to read magazines, do some adult coloring, or get into some arts and crafts.

6. Move Your Body. If you have been meaning to find time for a solo run, to take a yoga class, or finally try out a new fitness class, schedule it and put it on your planner. Find time to make let yourself workout by doing something you enjoy with all the added benefits of exercise.

7. Buy yourself flowers. I did this just yesterday when I grabbed an inexpensive bouquet at Trader Joe's. Having the smell and view of fresh flowers in my kitchen is a really nice pick-me-up, so I love grabbing some flowers for myself every so often.

proflowers-flowers
I love getting flowers
8. Put on Red Lipstick. Or wear and do whatever makes you feel beautiful. Maybe that is a favorite dress, piece of jewelry, or pair of shoes. Maybe it is going makeup-free and letting your freckles show. I know sometime it is nice to actually blow-dry my hair and put on some makeup for me to feel pretty when during the week I am spending as little time as possible getting ready in the mornings.

9. Spend some time outside. It can be going for a hike, afternoon walk, or even eating my lunch outside on a sunny day. Sometimes the simple act of spending some time outside because it makes me happy is all I need to brighten my day.

10. Nourish Your Body. Some days the best thing I can do to show myself self-love is just to make myself go go to bed to ensure I get enough rest. That also may mean treating myself to a big salad out for lunch because I know my body wants a big bowl of vegetables. Maybe it is your morning or evening meditation session. Whatever nourishes your body that you may have been neglecting, spend time doing that today.

What is your favorite way to show yourself self-love? Are you doing anything special for Valentine's Day?

{5 Friday Favorites} Otters, Micellar Water, and Tea

Disclosure: I received complimentary samples of Yogi Tea through my partnership as a Women's Health Action Hero. As always all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Happy Friday! My graduate school spring semester has started, and my schedule is the craziest yet because apparently that was possible. I'm slowly building up my running to hopefully 4 or 5 miles this weekend which is great. I've also been eating a lot of Trader Joe's mini frozen pizzas for dinner, which isn't the healthiest but is quite delicious. It's all about taking life one day at a time. Anyways, here are my 5 Friday favorites this week-have a fabulous weekend!

Favorite Animal Video: Otter pup in the snow at Yellowstone Park

So it was really tough to pick just one video. I watch so many cute animal videos during the week because they make me happy (and give me hope that is world is wonderful). I loved this video of a little otter enjoying the snow in Yellowstone Park. I am dying to get out to some of the National Parks out west.

Favorite Beauty Find: Trader Joe's Micellar Cleanser wipes

trader-joes-micellar-cleanser-towelettes

So I was introduced to micellar water after first trying the Garnier micellar water because it had good reviews for cleaning skin and removing makeup. Micelles are pretty much surfactants or tiny clusters of micelle molecules that are suspended in water and actually in many other makeup removers and toners (I'm a science nerd so I researched it!). The micelles attract dirt, grime, and oil and remove them from your skin without drying out your skin so you can just wipe your face off with micellar water on a cotton ball.

I have been using it to remove my makeup at night, and like that it doesn't dry out my face or leave an oily residue. ANYWAYS, I impulsively picked these up at Trader Joe's this week and like the towelette form which would be a nice form for travel. So far I think they are great, however it's probably cheaper to just use the micellar water and cotton balls than the 20 packs of towelettes because I use it every day.

Favorite Weather This Week: Short Sleeves Weather
