MIMM #16-Pep Talks

Well another weekend has flown by, and it was pretty great.  Lately I've been really hard on myself. This week I was really busy with a midterm, work projects, and chores. I've had a lot of those "I should " moments all week where I get stressed about the things I should be doing.

I only worked out 3 times this week when I should be getting ready to feel a little bit more confident about running the Philadelphia Half Marathon next Sunday.
I should be eating more vegetables.
I should have done a long run on Sunday morning.
I should be drinking more water instead of  just coffee.
I should have worked on my grad school applications this weekend.
I should have gone to bed earlier.

On Friday night I got upset because I know what I should be doing but why don't I just do it? Why do I get stressed out by healthy habits? Is it because there is so much pressure telling you what you SHOULD be doing to be thin/strong/healthy/attractive?

You know what though, I had a fun weekend. I think that choosing happiness over what may be the quote-unquote healthy choices is what you need to do, and I will continue to do it. Less stress makes me happier and healthier! It's also those moments of self-doubt and anxiety which allow me to rally, give myself a pep talk, and say forget, it-you're awesome,Lauren. I am always amazed at how fast times flies. Life goes on everyday so do what makes you happy.  My weekend  ended up being marvelous:

It's okay to get more rest. I ran a freaking speedy little marathon a month ago.

Enjoying the weekend allows me to feel energized to work hard during the week.

Facing some anxiety and getting a Bod Pod body composition test, even after drinking and staying out late the night before which probably made me bloated, is not that scary (more on that tomorrow!).

Late night pizza on Friday nights tastes even more amazing.

Sleeping in on mornings when it's cold outside is great.

Hanging out with people you don't see often is refreshing.

I'm running the Philadelphia half marathon for fun. It's not going to be PR and that's okay.

Okay, so the water one I need to work on to balance out the coffee because I am a little dehydrated :)

Remember to give yourself credit for all that you do and allow yourself to enjoy life!

  2. I can relate to this 100%. Whenever I have something I feel like I should do, it's like I do the opposite. Sometimes we need the extra sleep, or the extra rest day, or the extra fun time over the things that everyone around us makes us feel like we need to do. It does seem like you had a great weekend though despite those pesky shoulds and while I wish I was running Philly with you, I can't wait to hear how much fun it is! We can go to coldstone to celebrate :)

  3. it's so easy to be hard on yourself. i read a great quote over the weekend that said you should say to yourself what you would say to a friend. you would never tell a friend that she is not good enough, why should you tell yourself that?!

    2. Thanks! I know this is true and say it to other people too. It's just so hard to see clearly when it comes to yourself!

  4. we really ARE on the same wavelength today! i sure can relate to so much of this post, and not just the sentiments about feeling guilty over "shoulds". i can also relate to "Late night pizza on Friday nights tastes even more amazing." & "Sleeping in on mornings when it's cold outside is great." SERIOUSLY it's so nice to be cozy in bed and YES pizza just tastes so good on friday nights and even better late on a friday night. just reading this post from an outside perspective i'm thinking - this girl who runs halves "for fun" feels guilty too?! she doesn't deserve to feel that way! look at her healthy "fun"! but i totally understand being harder on yourself than anyone else. i do that all the freaking time. writing posts like this is a great way to remind you of the importance of choosing happiness over the shoulds. also, getting the bod pod test after a night out is super brave of you. i never would have done that!

    1. I know, right? Thanks for commenting. I think everybody always thinks the grass is greener or doesn't see others struggles or slipups all the time. Yeah I was scared about the test but it's part of body acceptance for me to just acknowledge what I'm working with ! It's just hard when you think of people who are always eating clean and working out 6 days a week but hey, there are people who got 0 workouts in this week that makes my 3 look great :)

  5. If you miss one run it wont be the end of the world. I wrote a post about this a few months ago. I was training for my marathon and skipped one of my 20 milers. I felt bad but.... me and the hubs needed time together to just cut lose and have fun. Between work and life sometimes you just have to prioritize

  6. I have definitely struggled with that. I think it's good to some extent - you have GOALS! At the same time, you have to cut yourself some slack. Even the best of the best have a season of rest. Listen to you body, and keep remembering that life is meant to be fun.

  7. It's difficult not to get into the comparison game, or wishing for more or better. Staying in the moment is hard, but it is very worth it. Enjoy the challenge!
