Things That Made Me Happy This Week #1

Hi, it's been a minute since I've typed a post. Honestly I've been going through a rough patch in life, and haven't felt like blogging and/or don't know what to blog about. If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I'm  marathon training again (more on that in an upcoming post!). I'm switching things up as one does when things feel stale. Instead of Five Friday Favorites I'm changing this series to "Things That Made Me Happy This Week" inspired by a segment on one of my favorite podcasts Pop Culture Happy Hour on NPR. So despite the sad/mad/frustrating/blah in my life, here is what is making me happy this week:

1. Lake Street Dive's new album Free Yourself Up

This is my favorite song on the album.
I have been obsessed with this album from Lake Street Dive, a band with a killer lead singer making a mix of pop, soul, and folk rock music. I was SO happy to get to see them at WTMD's free concert series First Thursdays at Canton Waterfront Park. Lake Street Dive put on an amazing performance!

2. Ice cream and freezy treats

As a sweet tooth, I enjoy ice cream and other cold desserts/treats year round, but there is something especially satisfying about an ice cream cone on a hot day.
I've been making it a weekly treat to go to a local ice cream or snowball stand and enjoy something delicious and refreshing.

This mint oreo ice cream cone from Dessert Fantasies in Locust Point after a really hot morning long run (and nap!) hit the spot last week.

It's local Taharka Brothers ice cream too :)

3. Nuun Hydration gummies

It's been hot and humid so I've been trying to make sure I am getting enough electrolytes, especially before/during/after my weekly long runs. I made these Nuun Hydration gummies before Boston and just whipped up another batch this week. I basically follow this recipe with some tweaks (I'll share mine on the blog another day!). I have been using Lemon-Lime Nuun Hydration along with lime flavored Jell-O. They are delicious and packed full of electrolytes.

4. Made to Be Broken on Netflix

I'm mostly a road runner, but still I love to read books and watch films about ultrarunning. I find it all fascinating and some of the distances covered (and in such short times often) amazing. I randomly turned this documentary, Made to Be Broken, on Netflix the other night and was glued to the screen. It chronicles Karl Meltzer's last attempt to break the Appalachian Trail time record in 2016. He set out to cover over 2000 miles of trail in less than 47 days to break the previous record. I do not want to spoil anything, but it's less than 45 minutes long and a really fun watch.

What is making YOU happy this week? Any good Netflix recommendations for me?

I'm linking up with the Friday Five 2.0 with Running on Happy & Fairytales and Fitness :)

  2. I saw Made to Be Broken this week as well! It was perfect since I'm reading North for my blog book club this month. I loved that Scott Jurek was in it and how supportive he was of Karl. He even mentions Karl in his book! Did you know that Karl's record was already broken?

    1. That's awesome! North is on my list of books to read. I also thought it was so cool how supportive Scott was of his friend (but competitor!) breaking his own record. All the runner love feels!

  3. Sorry to hear about the rough patch and hoping that you'll feel back to normal soon!

I got a lot of joy out of our birthday run for a friend on Weds. 6 ladies in birthday hats running in 90 degree weather gets a lot of love around here!

  4. The gummies sound like a great idea! I've found since going back to using Nuun this summer I've felt a lot better. I don't use it during, but before & after & it's definitely made a difference for me.

I have no desire to run an ultra -- haven't even done a marathon and have no plans for one anytime soon -- but I still find it fascinating to read about& the AT also fascinates me -- I might have to talk my husband into watching. I know he'll resist (he's not a runner), but I did get him to watch the Barkley Marathons & he actually found it interesting.

    1. Yes, I really need to be drinking more for my longer runs in this heat. My bf (a non-runner!) started watching this doc with me halfway through and even he thought it was cool!

  5. I never thought of making gummies from Nuun. I have a ton of lemon lime Nuun since that was the kind on sale awhile back. I need to look up that recipe. Thanks for linking up:)

  6. This is such an awesome idea for a post to just reflect on the good in life, instead of concentrating on the negatives. Advice my mom gave me on Wednesday during a vent session. I might do the same sometime soon as well :)

Hope life is kind to you again soon Lauren. Sending you positive vibes from your CPAL family.

  7. Those Nuun gummies look good! I'm not a fan of "fizzy" drinks, so I've never cared much for Nuun unless it was in very cold water (and I was very thirsty). I bet adding it to the jello, though, would alter the texture enough that I'd have a change of heart ;-) Thanks for the idea!

  8. I'm sorry you're going through a rough patch :( I hope things turn around for you very soon!

I, too, will eat ice cream whenever it is available, but the recent hot weather around here has made me want it even more than usual! I caved and bought a tub when I went grocery shopping a couple of weeks ago (and Magic Shell chocolate sauce! omg *heart eye emoji*). It has been a delightful way to end my day for the past week or so :)
