Today I'm bringing you a hilarious post from the fabulous Lauren of Twenty Something Living. At first she was unsure if I'd like it and immediately read it, laughed out loud, and told her it was great. I used to do yoga weekly a few years ago so now when I sporadically go to a class it always takes me a little bit of flow to get into the groove.

I also feel these thoughts WAY more in a really hot bikram class.  I'm also really get nervous about possibly farting in a quiet room!  I hope you enjoy this light-hearted take on yoga.

Internal Dialog of a Beginner Yogi

As a beginner yogi it often feels like I am trying to convince my body to become a hybrid pretzel, all in the name of flexibility. Walking to class I try to prepare myself with some deep breathing and minor stretching, getting in the groove for some serious body work, but knowing that just one class will have the stress running down my body in beads of sweat instead of holding my heart and mind captive. There are feel feelings better than the last few moments of a yoga class, and the feeling of the air on your face as you walk out of the studio into the evening air… but the internal dialog isn’t always so carefree:

“Ah, yes, this is good… Just relax, breathe, let the work day fade away….

How long do I really need to stretch this arm? The only thing it does at work is type… shhhhhh self, just enjoy it….

Ah downward facing dog…. nice, that feels good…. or wait- does it? … come to think of it this kind of makes my wrist hurt…. maybe I’ll just lean a little less…. no wait don’t come adjust me.. walk the other way sister.. oh great – yep that feels much better thanks….

How much time has passed? TWENTY MINUTES?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! No wonder they hide the clocks in weird areas of the studio….

Warrior – YES – I love warrior! Bring it! Yeah that right, my warrior is powerful, these legs are iron, look and be amazed. Let’s just do variations of warrior for the rest of the class – sounds good.

Ah yes, only twenty minutes left… I’m going to enjoy these last few series… it’s time to get in the zone.

I’m sorry… you want me to what? I know… I should be able to do a head stand from crow… but I can’t! Are people judging me? Oh wait, no one is even looking at me… maybe I’ll try it. Oh, YES, I got it!

WHAT EVEN IS THAT? Side crow with leg extension?!? Who do you think I am?! A bendie straw? How on earth am I supposed to do that?….

Downward facing dog… ah, yes.. butt up in the air… oh god – what if I farted? Please don’t fart….. aaaaand I farted.

Okay, Savasanah, I can do that… Zen. This is what peace feels like…

Wait did I fall asleep?”

  1. I am not a big fan of yoga. I always feel when I workout I want to be sweating and feeling like I am working hard. Breathe in breathe out just doesn't do it for me. Perhaps I haven't gave it enough of a chance.

  5. Great post! I have had these same thoughts during yoga. I used to practice more regularly, and I need to get back to it! I love it when you find a sequence or flow that you love and can silence the mind and really get into it!
