Unplugging

I wrote before about how I've been trying to unplug before bed and not spend half an hour on my Instagram or twitter.  Honestly all the bombardment of social media, aka a place for people to share but also show off has been causing a lot of anxiety for me.

I've decided for the next month to limit my social media time to 30 minutes approximately a day. I'll check out some of the blogs I like, do a quick Facebook check since I keep in touch with people that way, and limit my time online in general.  Seeing everybody who has 5 social media sites and instagrams their abs or oatmeal everyday causing a lot of comparisons and makes me feel down about myself about how much more I should be working out, eating less, and burning more calories.

The beginning of this week I felt so good and happy and strong and want to keep that going.  I'll try to blog probably about once or twice a week.  The interwebs and the strange world it is will go on whether I'm on it for a half an hour or 4 hours.  I'm going to get back into reading more books with my free time instead of just flipping through magazines on the bus to work or spending my lunch break on my phone. Hopefully as the weather warms up I'll spend some more time outside.

I've been thinking about my priorities and what I want in my life these past few months (residual New Year thoughts, perhaps?).  I have been working on removing negativity from my life and therefore stress.  I want to spend my time doing things that me happy and are productive while also giving myself enough time to recharge everyday.  This past week I've been working out because I want to, not because I feel like it is a chore I need to day. Monday there was a strength training circuit for Best Body Bootcamp that was on the schedule, but I was upset and just needed to run 4 miles, so I did.

If you are caught up in the craziness of life, which is how I usually feel around Wednesdays in the middle of the week, take a moment and breathe.

Do something that makes you happy :)

  1. I love LOVE this post. I agree that sometimes I get caught up in comparing myself to others via blog posts, updates and definitely instagrammed abs, I find that it motivates me a hell of a lot more than simply telling myself to haul ass at the gym. I find that these comparisons end up with me trying my very best at the gym, as seeing these posts and pictures make me want to work harder to come close to it. I guess there's pros and cons to it all. But I definitely agree with shutting off the devices sometimes and just doing you. Props for that.

    1. Thanks so much! I'm not saying that fitness photos/blogs aren't motivating, it's just sometimes it swings in the other direction and causes more anxiety when I forget that everybody is different and has different goals!

  2. I spend far too much time on social media sites. I really need to limit my use of them. I think it's a great decision especially if you're finding yourself comparing. I don't typically compare my meals so it's not an issue but there are times I'm like "wow, maybe I'm not as healthy as I think I am..." and that's a problem. I am looking forward to hear how this mini detox goes for you!

  4. I really love that you wrote this post. Lately I feel so overwhelmed with everything, and all I want to do is curl up with a good book before bed, but instead I'm getting caught up in all things internet related.

    1. Thank you SO much! Exactly, I used to read a chapter of a book before bed, now I spend a half an hour on instagram, which is like a computer screen/tv and disrupts sleep before bed anyways!

  6. Unplugging feels so good! I don't have a TV in the bedroom, and I use my last half hour before bedtime reading. It's just so relaxing and drama-free ;)

  7. I made a rule for lent to turn off all internet (computer and phone) at 10:00. I'm sleeping more, reading more, feeling better. The social media comparison has gotten ridiculous! Who has time for two-a-days and writing a blog? Does anyone sleep anymore?

  8. I love this post! Just what I needed to hear! I am on the social media sites way to much, and it does make you feel down on yourself if you aren't eating and exercising the way other people are. Life is more than that, yes it is important to do those things but you should want to, not feel like you have to!
